Mary Catchell
Mary Gatchell is a dynamic singer, pianist, and composer based in New York City. Her music is an eclectic soulful mix of singer/songwriter storytelling, jazzy harmonies, and solid rock/pop hooks. Mary's music takes you on a journey from intimate, tender ballads, to textural orchestrations with blazing guitar solos, to danceable funk grooves. Mary's vibe is uplifting, sincere, and passionate. With four albums to her credit, she has played in legendary clubs such as the Bitter End, CBGB's, Kenny's Castaway, Blue Note, Cutting Room, Knitting Factory, Boston House of Blues, Ryles, and many more.

Mary's exciting new album, "Saturn Return" encompasses elements of classic pop and R&B fused with modern production sensibilities. It is a unique hybrid of contemporary genres while at the same time creating a sound completely fresh and new. The songs are both danceable and emotional, both visceral and cerebral. Produced by renowned drummer, Rodney Holmes, (of Santana, Brecker Brothers, Wayne Shorter) "Saturn Return" is a departure from her traditional piano driven recordings and performances. Mary expands her sonic range by moving away from the acoustic piano on several songs and embracing other sounds. Mary plays mostly fender rhodes on this album and on songs like "Beautiful World" and "Saturn Return" utilizes more electronic and synth sounds. Mary's artistic evolution continues to grow, expand, and challenge the listener in "Saturn Return".

From the town of Epping, New Hampshire, Mary cultivated her musical talents in voice, piano, and oboe gaining a solid foundation from her parents, both musicians. At 18, she moved to New York City to attend New York University. The city exposed her to all kinds of music, which significantly inspired her to write and explore different sounds and rhythms. She delved into Brazilian, African, classical, jazz, musical theatre, and opera. While continuing to study voice, piano, and oboe at NYU, she graduated Magna Cum Laude, earning her degree in Theory and Composition, having studied with composers Jim McNeely and Justin Dello Joio. She has written several pieces, not only for her own group made up of a traditional rock band instrumentation, but also for orchestra, choir, and chamber ensembles. She is also the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Siena Summer Music, a chamber music festival in Italy.

Another one of Mary's passions is sharing and educating children through music. She has developed and implemented music programs for young, orphaned children in Ethiopia, Bulgaria, and just recently, Haiti. Her new children's album of all original songs, Music with Mary is here!
